Lianas, large to very large. Stem robust, woody, branched and rooting. Leaves long petiolate; petiole with pulvinus at junction with leaf blade, somewhat sheathing at base; leaf blade large, entire, pinnatifid or pinnatisect, with perforations along midrib or not. Inflorescence terminal or sometimes displaced, solitary; peduncle robust. Spathe caducous, cymbiform (keeled), ovate, acute to acuminate. Spadix sessile. Flowers bisexual, sometimes with female ones at base and these are sterile. Perianth absent. Stamens 4(-6); filaments linear, flat; anthers much shorter than filaments; thecae ellipsoidal, longitudinally dehiscent. Ovary polygonal-cylindric, apex truncate, 1-locular; ovules 2-4, inserted at base of parietal placentas, sometimes 6-8, distichous on parietal placentas, anatropous, with short funicle; stigma sessile, linear-oblong, longitudinal. Fruit small. Seeds reniform, usually striate.

Perennial root climber. Stem robust, up to 4 cm in diameter, internodes separated by prominent leaf scars, long aerial roots at nodes help in climbing. Leaves alternate; lamina ovate or broadly ovate, or ovate-oblong, base cordate, margin entire, shortly cuspidate, up to 41cm x 30 cm, leathery, glabrous, green, golden yellow or variegated; petioles up to 30 cm long, base sheathing, winged near to lamina.
